When interviewing for a construction job, the way you dress impacts the interviewer’s first impression of you. This is why you need the proper attire to show you are a good fit for the role. You should feel more confident, which can help you build rapport and provide strong answers during the discussion.

1. Casual Attire

Choose clothing that is comfortable and makes you feel confident. This may include a long-sleeved, button-up dress shirt, khakis or dark pants, and plain leather shoes for women or men. If the weather is cold or wet, you may want to add a dressy coat or blazer. Your clothes should be clean and pressed, showing that the interview and job are important to you. You want to leave the impression that you are a responsible person. Be sure to avoid clothing with a pattern, caption, slogan, or bright colors, which may distract the interviewer.

2. Professional Image

Select an outfit that fits well and covers your body. Avoid clothing that is too tight, too short, stained, or exposes too much skin. This includes sleeveless tops and tattered clothes, which may portray an uncaring and unprofessional image. You could be viewed as irresponsible or unprepared for the interview. Be sure to complete your look with clean, polished shoes. Leather or suede are among your best options. Avoid running or multicolored shoes.

3. Polished Look

Pay attention to the details that pull together your professional look. For instance, make sure your nails are trimmed, hair is cut, and any facial hair is groomed. Also, if you wear a watch, belt, or jewelry, choose something that is not flashy. Additionally, if you wear makeup, keep it minimal. You want the interviewer to focus on your qualifications and experience more than your appearance.

4. Advice from the Hiring Manager

If you are unsure of what to wear for your interview, talk with a member of human resources or the hiring manager for guidance. They can give you specific examples of what they are looking for when they meet with candidates. This shows you care about portraying a professional image and putting your best foot forward.
